Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

Queensland University of Technology is a major Australian university with a global outlook and a real-world focus. They are one of the nation’s fastest growing research universities and their courses are in high demand. Their campuses offer high quality learning, teaching and research spaces to better meet the needs of students, academics and researchers.

The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering

The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at QUT is committed to the practical application of theory together with industry tools that can be used to enhance this theoretical knowledge throughout the many courses on offer. ‘Industry Tools’ such as RIB CostX® have allowed the students to be engaged in the more fundamental core, technical competencies, within the School of Urban Developments’ Bachelor of Urban Development (Construction Management and Quantity Surveying courses).

Implementing RIB CostX® into classes

With the rise of Building Information Modelling (BIM) across the commercial building industry, the introduction to students of new real-world technologies such as RIB CostX® over recent years, in the areas of traditional construction measurement, cost planning and other estimating core competencies has been very successful, both from the point of view of the students and the practitioners delivering the theoretical material. This BIM-enabling technology provides benefits not only to students, but also to the wider construction industry. When read together with the traditional documents (drawings & specifications), QUT has found that students form a better understanding of project design and the subsequent practical application of the theoretical competencies being delivered. QUT recognises the potential for students to lead more readily into the future because of technologies such as BIM, contributing more fully to the future sustainable built environment.
